At Broadcrown Power Engineering, we specialise in providing critical power solutions to healthcare facilities, ensuring that operations remain uninterrupted even under the most demanding circumstances. Our recent project at an NHS hospital in the Northwest highlights our expertise in modernising power systems to support vital healthcare services.
This key healthcare facility, includes approximately 2,400 inpatient and 600 day-case beds and offers a comprehensive suite of services, including emergency, maternity, and specialised care. Handling nearly 189,000 operations and over 405,000 outpatient attendances annually, maintaining an uninterrupted power supply is crucial.
The challenge was to upgrade critical systems without disrupting the hospital’s day-to-day operations. Our approach was to work closely with hospital staff to ensure medical services could continue without interruption, necessitating a carefully structured and detailed series of plans.
The project began with thorough validations of existing assets, drawings, and documentation related to the embedded power generation equipment and switchgear, ensuring compatibility and design accuracy.
The scope involved replacing the control systems for four high-voltage embedded generator sets while maintaining a fully automatic generator backup with the installation of temporary generator hire equipment. The new control system was designed and factory-tested, featuring new software to mirror the existing operating philosophy and include the benefits of the latest ComAp products.
A new fibre optic communication backbone was installed, forming a dual ring system between all products, which is crucial for robust and reliable system communication. Temporary generator equipment was integrated into the existing site infrastructure, featuring a control system that interfaced with both the existing and new range of controllers, ensuring seamless power continuity during the transition.
The project concluded with successful onsite installation and commissioning, significantly enhancing the hospital’s power system resilience with minimal impact on its operations. This upgrade underscores Broadcrown Power Engineering’s commitment to delivering sophisticated power solutions in high-stakes environments like healthcare.
