Mains & Generator Breaker Replacement – Delivering uninterrupted power in a critical healthcare environment

Broadcrown Power Engineering was appointed to replace ageing mains and generator breakers at Prospect Park Hospital, a live healthcare facility where maintaining uninterrupted power was critical to patient safety and operational continuity.

The existing breakers had been in service for over 25 years and had reached end-of-life, with limited availability of replacement parts. As key protection devices within the electrical infrastructure, their continued operation presented a growing risk of unplanned power failure, with potential impact on clinical systems and patient care.

To deliver the upgrade without disruption, a full temporary generation solution was deployed to support the entire hospital throughout the works. Operating 24/7 and supported by detailed load assessments and real-time monitoring, the system ensured complete resilience during the transition.

The project required the integration of modern Air Circuit Breakers into an existing switchboard. To achieve this, the upper and lower busbars were modified, and bespoke copper busbar links were manufactured to enable safe and effective connectivity.

Works were delivered using a phased approach, with each ward individually transferred onto temporary power before the existing breakers were removed, replaced, and fully commissioned. The site was then systematically returned to mains power following successful testing.

The project was completed without a single unplanned outage, delivering a more resilient and future-proof electrical system while maintaining full hospital operations throughout.
